It started like this:

Kinja'd!!!

Then got to this point:

Kinja'd!!!

Where I adjusted the valves and then replaced the spark plugs.

And 6 hours later, things were back to picture #1 along with everything tidied up.

This is the first time I’ve ever done this.  If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in 3-4 hours instead of 6 (which also included a few breaks and time to consult some YouTube vids)

While adjusting the valves, I discovered that the right intake valve on cylinder #2 (2nd from left... and the intake valves are to the front) doesn’t like to hold its adjustment. I fucked around with it for a while, but basically, something is fucked up with that lifter. I figure at worst, cylinder 2 will operate like a 3 valve instead of a 4 valve.

One thing I found odd... I found I had to tighten the intake side and loosen the exhaust side.

Anyone here deeply knowledgeable about Honda engines know why that would be?

I would have thought that as an engine ages, the exhaust would get loose like the intake side.

Did you need any special tools for that valve adjustment? Very cool thought congrats on being done a first time job! Think about the $$ you saved and pat yourself on the back

Thanks!

The only special tool needed was a set of feeler gauges I bought from Rock Auto for $5.

It’s not technically a hard job... just time consuming.

I figure I saved at least $400

You’d expect the gaps to open as things wear, but it i s possible that the lash closes if the valve seat wears (or gets hammered into the head, but this isn’t 1975) , since the valve would go slightly further up when released.

I have to do this job, we have had a Honda Fit since new, and it is well past due. I figured about a half a day’s job, which means block out a day. Did you use the bent feeler ga u ges? I saw somewhere they are helpful, but wanted to confirm before I order, I already have a straight set.

I used a straight set and it was fine

More important is to get a gauge set with the sizes you need... specifically 0.006, 0.007, 0.010, 0.011 and 0.012

Oh and make sure you have your radio code as you’ll have to disconnect and remove the battery... and after you put everything back  together, the radio will ask you for that code.

I did my first ever valve adjustment somewhat recently — on a 76 TR6. It was pretty easy really. They were all over the place, and though it didn’t run badly before it definitely runs smoother at low revs now.

Thanks! I am more  worried about getting in there mor e than the valve adjustment, it looks like kind of a pain.

Not that big of a deal with the flat feeler gauges since the flat ones are bendable.

Not a hard job, just time consuming.

And my body now feels somewhat broken... like I got a full body workout.

I have done a TR6 (TR250 actually) much easier than the Honda, just because the access is so much easier.
